Return to Our Continental Giants

Wesley and Bert

Wesley and Bert joined us from Lecoeur Rescue in July 2008.  They had been taken in as an emergency along with one brother and we were contacted 'knowing you like your Contis!...'

Coincidentally a short time beforehand we had discussed making alterations to one small shed and converting it from having stacked caging into a free run area for a bonded pair of Continental Giants.  The telephone call caused a degree of urgency to enter into our planning and within the week the conversion was complete.

Wesley and Bert duly arrived and made themselves at home immediately by chewing on the new woodwork.  We were warned they would be trouble and they have indeed fulfilled their potential.

Wesley is the Steel and Bertie, the Blue.

Initially we were delighted with how the two brothers got on together and in time they both visited the vet!  This marked the end of a loving relationship for within a fortnight suddenly territorial considerations became important to Wesley.  A  full scale 'fur fight' began - with blood being spilled and Bert carrying  scar on the end of his nose to this day.  We had anticipated that there might be problems and had built into the initial conversion-plans some emergency dividers for the cage, which indeed were brought into action.  Later a permanent but meshed divider was constructed. The boys were able to see and make contact with each other, but not fight.

As time has gone on we have been able to let them run free in the garden together and by using neutral territory a close bond is developing.  We are hopeful that in the future we may be able to get them together again.
